On July 11, Northern Cyprus celebrates Press Day
President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Ersin Tatar, congratulated members of the press on this occasion. This professional holiday is observed annually on July 11 in Northern Cyprus.
The leader of the Turkish Cypriots recalled that on July 11, 1889, the first Turkish newspaper, "SADED," was published in Cyprus. This day holds significance as Press Day in the country.
"135 years have passed since that day—a period that reveals the rich history of Cypriot-Turkish press. Despite numerous threats and pressures, from the times of British colonial rule to the years of our struggle, the Turkish Cypriot press has shouldered significant responsibilities in our people's fight for freedom and existence, enlightening our community and providing direction and insight," stated the president.
According to the TRNC president, "it is crucial that media organizations promoting democracy, pluralism, and diverse thinking operate in line with the principles of impartial, accurate journalism, and press ethics, while also enlightening the public."
Ersin Tatar also stressed, "any form of pressure or interference with the media is unacceptable."
"I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all members of the press on this July 11 Press Day, who have amplified the voice of our people globally and ensured freedom of information for our community for over a century," concluded the president.
