Energy Workers Strike in Northern Cyprus
Representatives of the Turkish Cypriot Electrical Authority Workers' Union (EL-SEN) have announced a strike in the TRNC. Operations have been halted at all energy facilities and repair workshops of the power stations in the region.
According to the union's statement, the strike is in response to the Turkish Cypriot Electricity Authority (KIB-TEK) refusing to take responsibility for potential workplace accidents until the necessary safety materials are provided.
As a result, all regional businesses and power stations have suspended their repair workshops starting this morning.
To minimize the impact on consumers, key units responsible for energy production will continue to operate.
This morning, union representatives met with KIB-TEK management and presented their 20-point list of demands, primarily concerning occupational health and safety.
It is noted that KIB-TEK management has requested additional time from the unions to address labor safety regulations and procure the required materials.
Later, EL-SEN announced that the strike, which began at 09:30, has been temporarily suspended. A meeting with KIB-TEK General Manager Dalman Aydın is scheduled for Friday, August 9.
Additionally, KIB-TEK released an official statement on its social media page regarding the strike. The statement asserts that EL-SEN's claims do not accurately reflect the situation, noting that "some processes are occasionally delayed due to issues with tender procedures and project implementation."
