Checks begin in Northern Cyprus due to plastic bag ban

The Department of Environmental Protection under the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment of the TRNC has started inspections of retail outlets in connection with the new ban on the use of plastic bags.
From January 1, 2026, the sale and free distribution of shopping bags with a thickness of 15 to 50 microns is completely prohibited in Northern Cyprus. The measure aims to combat plastic pollution and protect the environment and public health.
On the first day of inspections, officers conducted 187 raids across all districts. During the checks, it was found that some stores and retail outlets continued to use banned bags. Official warnings were issued to the owners of these locations. The department emphasized that repeat violations will result in fines in accordance with the law.
The Ministry and the Department of Environmental Protection stated that all regulatory frameworks are already in place and the action plan has been officially launched. Inspections and awareness campaigns will continue in all six districts.
