Drug detection devices to be introduced for drivers in Northern Cyprus

The President of the Road Accident Prevention Association, Dr. Mehmet Zeki Avcı, stated that the introduction of devices to test drivers for drugs and alcohol will significantly improve road safety in Northern Cyprus.
According to Avcı, the law allowing the use of such devices was passed several years ago, but its implementation was delayed due to financial difficulties and the high cost of equipment. Now, after the Kaner Group private company handed over testing devices to the police, the situation is changing: law enforcement officers will be able to start using the new technologies in roadside inspections.
Avcı thanked the company’s director, Güliz Kaner, for her support and noted that the equipment provided includes breathalyzers, drug detection devices, test kits, and printers for recording results. He emphasized that such devices will serve not only as a control tool but also as a deterrent: drivers’ awareness of inevitable testing will reduce cases of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
According to statistics, a significant portion of serious accidents in Northern Cyprus is related to the use of psychoactive substances or alcohol. Avcı described this not merely as a rule violation but as an “intentional criminal act” that endangers the lives of other road users.
He also reminded that, under current law, drivers with a blood alcohol level exceeding 150‰ are immediately brought before the court. The fine for such a violation can reach up to 15 times the minimum wage and may also include a driving ban for up to six months.
The Road Safety Association and the police expect that the introduction of the new testing systems will make it possible to identify offenders more effectively on the spot and significantly reduce the number of road accidents related to drugs and alcohol.
