The Largest Mosque on the Island Opens for Worship in Northern Cyprus
The TRNC witnessed the grand opening ceremony of the Dr. Suat Günsel Mosque. High-ranking officials from Northern Cyprus and Turkey participated in the event.
Present at the mosque's opening ceremony were TRNC President Ersin Tatar, the Speaker of the Republic's Assembly Zorlu Töre, Vice President of Turkey Jevdet Yılmaz, Minister of Industry and Technology of Turkey Mehmet Fatih Kacır, Prime Minister of Northern Cyprus Ersan Saner, Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey in Nicosia Metin Feyzioğlu, as well as ministers, deputies, parliament members, and the founding rector of the Near East University, Suat Günsel.
Additionally, guests from Azerbaijan, Tatarstan, Kazakhstan, Iran, and Somalia took part in the event.
The mosque's opening ceremony commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran and proceeded with speeches by President Ersin Tatar, Vice President of Turkey Jevdet Yılmaz, Prime Minister Ersan Saner, and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Near East University, Irfan Suat Günsel.
After the speeches, a symbolic ribbon-cutting took place, officially opening the mosque for worship with the midday prayer.
It's worth noting that the foundation of the mosque was laid in 2013, and it took 10 years to complete the construction. This monumental structure, with 62 domes and 6 minarets, is the largest mosque in the TRNC and the sixth-largest in the region, including Turkey. It can accommodate up to 10,000 worshippers simultaneously.
