Researchers from Near East University have identified a new species of moth named Scrobipalpa chardonnayi. Found in the Alsancak region, this species stands out with notable morphological and genetic differences compared to previously known species.

The discovery was detailed in a scientific article authored by Özge Özden, the founding dean of Near East University’s Faculty of Agriculture, and Austrian entomologist Dr. Peter Humer. The article was published in the respected journal Zootaxa.

This groundbreaking discovery not only sheds light on the rich biodiversity of Cyprus but also introduces a completely new species to the scientific community.

During their study of samples collected in Alsancak, the researchers confirmed that the newly discovered species belongs to the Gelechiidae family of moths and is part of the Scrobipalpa genus, which includes over 300 species worldwide.

The moth is particularly striking due to its grayish-blue coloration adorned with delicate orange-brown spots, characteristic of the Gnorimoschemini family. It also stands out with significant differences in the genital structures of males and females.

DNA analysis revealed a 6% genetic divergence between this species and its closest known relatives, further establishing its uniqueness.

The globally recognized journal Zootaxa, which specializes in animal systematics and taxonomy, has acknowledged this research as a significant contribution to the field.

  • “We are immensely proud that our researchers continue to lead efforts in unveiling Cyprus’s natural treasures to the global scientific community. After documenting newly discovered spider species under the name ‘Günsel,’ we are thrilled to introduce the biodiversity of Northern Cyprus through the discovery of the new moth species Scrobipalpa chardonnayi,” said Irfan Suat Günsel, Chairman of the Near East University Board of Trustees.
