The “Champion Angels” sports complex has officially opened in Famagusta, Northern Cyprus. The project was carried out as part of the “Local Infrastructure” program, funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The opening ceremony took place at Turkish Maarif College in Famagusta, bringing together members of the Turkish Cypriot community, school administrators, teachers, students, families, and representatives of the “Champion Angels” Association. Officials from the European Commission and UNDP also attended the event.

The renovated facilities were named the “Champion Angels” Sports Complex in honor of the young volleyball players who tragically lost their lives in the earthquake that struck Turkey on February 6, 2023.

Designed to meet high-quality standards, the upgraded facilities will allow students to participate in a variety of sports. The project included the installation of specialized sports flooring, mini-football goals, basketball and volleyball posts, as well as the refurbishment of existing sports enclosures.

The total cost of the project was approximately €150,000.

On February 6, Northern Cyprus commemorated the victims of the earthquake with a solemn ceremony marking the second anniversary of the “tragedy of the century.” The President and other high-ranking officials addressed the nation with messages of remembrance.
