The Continuous Wastewater Monitoring System (SAIS) has been implemented at the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment of the TRNC. It was developed by the Environmental Protection Agency in 2016 and allows for round-the-clock remote monitoring of wastewater discharged into the sea from the country's treatment plants.
The SAIS presentation took place yesterday at the Environmental Protection Agency. In his statement after the presentation, the Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment, Fikri Ataoglu, noted that the department has been working for many years to prevent marine pollution.
Currently, 7 hotels are remotely monitored through the system. In the near future, 8 more facilities will be connected to the system. Data from 15 facilities will be monitored simultaneously.
With this system, it is possible to remotely monitor the cleanliness of wastewater flow, Suspended Dry Matter (SDM), dissolved oxygen, pH, flow rate, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), temperature, conductivity, and other indicators. The center is automatically alerted when any anomalies in the indicators are detected.
According to the minister, after conducting wastewater analyses, based on the reports provided by the Department of Environmental Protection, work will begin on awarding "Blue Flag" awards to beaches so that the public can comfortably enjoy safe and environmentally clean bathing areas.
