Second Day of Landfill Fire in Northern Cyprus
A major fire at the solid waste landfill in Güngör, Northern Cyprus, has been burning for the second day in a row, and efforts to contain it are still underway. There is growing concern that the flames may continue to spread.
According to a statement from the police, the fire broke out around 10:00 p.m. yesterday at the solid waste disposal site. Thick smoke continues to rise from the area and has already reached nearby villages. Authorities have cordoned off the landfill, and firefighters, along with heavy machinery from a private company, are on-site battling the blaze. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
It’s worth noting that the TRNC Ministry of the Interior recently launched a tender for the management of the Güngör landfill. The contract is valued at over 43 million Turkish lira.
The landfill, originally built in 2013 with funding from the European Union, is nearing full capacity. In recent years, the site has seen a rising number of fires, raising concerns over safety and environmental impact.
