Northern Cyprus Sets Record for Energy Consumption
According to the Northern Cyprus Electricity Authority (Kıb-Tek), energy consumption in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) reached a record-breaking 460 megawatts yesterday evening.
In an interview with TAK reporters, Dalman Aydın, the Director of Kıb-Tek, highlighted that this is an unprecedented situation. He noted that electricity consumption in the country has never surged like this before.
A similar energy demand issue was experienced by the Republic of Cyprus yesterday as well. On Monday evening, demand surpassed the previous record set in January 2022, when it peaked at 1066 MW.
As previously reported, last week Cyprus had to turn to Turkish Cypriots for help, receiving free electricity from the north to the south.
However, this time, no electricity was purchased from the northern part of the island, as the TRNC is currently struggling to meet its own demand.
It’s important to mention that on February 25, Northern Cyprus recorded its coldest day in 50 years, with temperatures in Geçitkale dropping to -6.2°C.
