The Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the Department of Livestock, and the Fisheries Department of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) have reminded fishermen about the seasonal bans on catching certain fish species during their breeding periods.

In a statement, the departments explained that fishing for fish and other marine life during their spawning season disrupts the production of new generations.

Under the "Fishing Permits and Sustainable Use of Fish Resources" regulation, catching the following species is prohibited during their spawning and breeding seasons:

  • Bluefin tuna – from November 1 to May 15
  • Swordfish – from October 1 to November 30 and from January 1 to March 31
  • Certain grouper species – from May 15 to July 15
  • Octopuses – from February 1 to March 1

The statement also stressed that collecting octopuses using hooks or by hand along the shore, both during the day and at night, is strictly prohibited.

During the ban periods, these species cannot be caught, stored on board, transferred to another vessel, brought ashore, or sold. Violators will face a fine equal to the minimum wage.

Fishermen, fish restaurant owners, retailers, and consumers are urged to remain especially vigilant during these critical periods.

Although the fishing bans may lead to short-term economic losses for fishermen, the departments emphasized their importance for the long-term sustainability of fisheries and the health of marine ecosystems.

"The fishing bans allow species to reproduce and marine stocks to replenish. Some species are essential for maintaining ecological balance. Therefore, these restrictions are vital for conserving various marine species," the departments explained.
