The Reason for Traffic Light Outages Throughout Northern Cyprus Revealed
Over the past weekend, traffic lights throughout Northern Cyprus were suddenly turned off. The malfunctions were resolved within a few hours.
The mayor of Kyrenia, Murat Şenkul, explained the reasons for the malfunction on social media. According to the mayor, the traffic lights stopped working due to a systemic glitch.
After two hours, all traffic lights in the Nicosia region and in the New Harbor of Kyrenia were reactivated. In other regions, it took a few more hours to fix the issues.
"All these traffic lights are manufactured by the same company. Due to a systemic error in the software of the manufacturing company, December 23 was mistakenly entered as the end date of the year instead of December 31. As a result, the traffic lights were turned off at midnight. Thanks to overnight contacts with the dealer of the corresponding brand in Cyprus, the problem was identified and started to be resolved. Therefore, such a problem will not happen again," wrote Murat Şenkul on his social media page.
The mayor also thanked the traffic police officers, road service engineers, and technical staff of the municipality for their prompt intervention, which allowed the issue to be resolved without any serious incidents.
