New Minimum Wage in Northern Cyprus Could Be Decided Today
Today, the Minimum Wage Determination Commission in Northern Cyprus is holding a meeting. The session began at 9:30 AM in the Ministry of Labor and Social Security’s conference room.
During this meeting, participants are expected to set the third minimum wage for 2024.
To recap, on August 21, the Federation of Free Workers’ Unions (Hür-İş) urged the Minimum Wage Commission and the Ministry of Labor and Social Security to hold a new session.
After receiving no response for some time, the unions threatened to strike if the commission did not convene within 24 hours. The strike was scheduled to begin on Wednesday at 11:00 AM, but it was eventually called off after the commission meeting date was confirmed.
The last change to the minimum wage in Northern Cyprus was made in late May. The Commission decided on a 23.5% increase, raising the wage to 29,640 Turkish Lira. This decision was agreed upon by representatives of the government and workers, but employer representatives voted against it. A 10-day period for objections was allowed, and after reviewing them, the wage was slightly reduced by 120 Lira. As of today, the minimum wage in Northern Cyprus stands at 29,520 Turkish Lira.
