Dangerous manhole in Lefkosa: driver left without help

Resident of Kumyali Hasan Guzel reported that his car was damaged due to an open manhole on the roadside, but he was unable to find anyone responsible for the incident.

According to him, after turning, he drove over an open manhole marked Devlet Su İşleri (DSİ). The deep hole caused the car’s tires to burst, and the incident could have resulted in a serious accident.

Afterwards, the driver contacted DSİ, but they stated that their manholes are round, and this one — being rectangular — likely belongs to another agency or the municipality.

The police, who arrived at the scene, noted that the manhole was already at the edge of the road and “could have been open,” but Guzel emphasizes that at the moment of impact it was on the roadway, as confirmed by eyewitnesses.

“My car is tall — I managed to get out. An ordinary passenger car could have gotten stuck or overturned,” he said.

The Kumyali resident calls on the responsible authorities to urgently eliminate the hazard before the situation leads to serious consequences.
