The Republican Turkish Party (CTP), the main opposition party in Northern Cyprus, has officially named its candidate for this year’s presidential election in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Tufan Erhürman will go head-to-head with incumbent President Ersin Tatar.

The decision was made on Sunday during the CTP’s 29th regular congress. Erhürman, who was the sole nominee, was re-elected as party leader and unanimously confirmed as the party’s presidential candidate. A total of 1,401 delegates participated in the vote.

The congress, held at the Atatürk Sports Hall, also saw the election of a new 75-member party assembly.

Erhürman, 54, has been leading the CTP since 2016. He previously served as Prime Minister from 2018 to 2019.

In the upcoming election, he will challenge President Ersin Tatar, who is backed by the ruling National Unity Party (UBP).

Preparations are already underway for the 2025 presidential election in Northern Cyprus. The sixth president of the TRNC must be elected by no later than October 12.
