Pegasus Airlines: 20 Years in the North Cyprus Market and Leadership at Ercan Airport
Pegasus Airlines has played a key role in the air connection of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) with Turkey and other countries for two decades. Since its first flight in 2006, the carrier has become the main operator at Ercan Airport.
By 2025, Pegasus's share of passenger traffic in Ercan is projected to be around 57% — today, every second passenger departing from the airport chooses Pegasus.
Over 20 years, Pegasus has transported over 28 million passengers to and from the TRNC. While the volume of traffic in 2006 was about 188,000 people, more than 3.3 million passengers per year are expected by 2025.
Currently, the airline operates:
- 222 flights per week in the summer season
- 217 flights per week in winter
- flights to 11 destinations
By 2025, three Pegasus aircraft will be based at Ercan, confirming the company's long-term investment in the region.
The growth in passenger traffic has had a positive impact on tourism — one of the key sectors of the TRNC economy. Improved air links have stimulated:
- hotel business development
- growth in the number of tourists from Turkey
- increased business activity
- expansion of trade relations
Furthermore, more convenient flights have fostered the development of educational and professional links between Northern Cyprus and Turkey.
Pegasus states its intention to maintain leadership in the region, expand its route network, and increase flight frequency. The company views its presence in the TRNC not only as a commercial project but also as a strategic mission to integrate the region into the global transport system.
Over 20 years, Pegasus Airlines has evolved from one of the carriers into the key airline of Northern Cyprus, strengthening its status as the main air bridge between Cyprus, Turkey, and the outside world.
