TRNC transport operators: without tariff adjustments, bus services will become unsustainable
The head of the Kar-İş association, Fuat Topaloğlu, warned on September 10 that without a revision of tariffs, passenger transport in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) could become unsustainable. According to him, the 2025–2026 school year will start on September 15, and over 700 Kar-İş members with approximately 850 vehicles will serve Ministry of Education routes outside the regular lines.
Topaloğlu noted that fare adjustments in public transport have not been made for more than a year, during which fuel prices have increased four times, the minimum wage has risen, and a significant portion of expenses is calculated in foreign currency. "Under these conditions, transportation operations have become unmanageable," the Kar-İş statement cites the source.
According to the association, the lack of regulation threatens the sustainability of school and city transport and creates uncertainty for drivers and sector employees. Topaloğlu urged the government to take the necessary measures as soon as possible and called on colleagues to show solidarity to protect labor rights.
For TRNC residents, this means a risk of reduced or complicated school transport and potential schedule changes. Kar-İş recommends monitoring official announcements from the Ministry of Education and transport operators regarding possible service changes.
