UN envoy María Ángela Holguín will arrive in Cyprus to prepare for a trilateral meeting
According to the Greek newspaper Fileleftheros, the personal representative of the UN Secretary-General, María Ángela Holguín, will arrive in Cyprus on Monday and begin a series of meetings aimed at preparing a trilateral dialogue between the parties on the island. On Tuesday at 09:00, she is reportedly scheduled to meet with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, and around 11:00 will cross the dividing line to meet with the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Ersin Tatar.
According to the publication, on Tuesday evening Holguín will meet with members of the Committee on Missing Persons, and on Wednesday — with participants of the joint technical committee on youth affairs. The envoy is expected to leave the island on Friday; during her visit, visits to the Greek cemetery in Güzelyurt and the Turkish cemetery in Larnaca are planned.
The article also notes that one of the topics of discussion may be the issue of five citizens of the Republic of Cyprus allegedly being held in custody in the TRNC. For residents of Northern Cyprus, this means the likelihood of increased security measures and temporary movement restrictions in meeting areas, as well as possible official statements touching on intercommunal issues. It is recommended to follow announcements from the authorities and official press releases.
