Two Aftershocks Recorded Following Last Night’s Earthquake Near Cyprus
Following the earthquake off the coast of Cyprus last night, two aftershocks have been recorded. Seismologists have stated that these tremors are "a normal part of the island's seismic activity."
Christodoulos Hatzigeorgiou, Director of the Department of Geological Research, told the Cyprus News Agency (KYPE) that the earthquake was strongly felt in the Paphos and Limassol districts, as well as throughout the rest of Cyprus, including the TRNC.
The earthquake struck the island around 12:30 AM. The Seismological Service reported it had a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was located in the sea, 18 kilometers southwest of Paphos and at a depth of about 13 kilometers. Following this, two aftershocks were recorded in the region.
Hatzigeorgiou also noted that over the past thirty years, eight earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 4.5 to 5.2 on the Richter scale have been recorded on the island.
According to the Civil Defense of the Republic of Cyprus, there have been no reports of injuries or damage from the earthquake.
