Fire in Alayköy: Overheated mobile phone caused blaze in workers' house
A serious fire broke out on August 4 in a workers’ house in the village of Alayköy. According to police reports, the cause of the fire was a short circuit triggered by an overheated mobile phone that was charging on a bed.
The incident occurred around 15:30. According to the official report, the phone was connected to the power supply and left on the mattress. Due to overheating, a short circuit occurred, igniting the blanket, after which the flames quickly spread throughout the room.
Firefighters arrived quickly at the scene and managed to contain the blaze. Nevertheless, the fire destroyed three single beds with mattresses, two fans, a refrigerator, two electric stoves, and a significant amount of personal belongings, including clothing.
Additionally, a nearby container storing office supplies was also damaged by the fire. Preliminary reports indicate that the contents were affected by high temperatures and smoke.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities remind the public of the dangers of overheating mobile devices and urge them to take precautions: do not leave phones on soft surfaces while charging, only use certified chargers, and never leave gadgets connected to power unattended.
Experts also emphasize that lithium-ion batteries used in modern smartphones are susceptible to “thermal runaway” — a chain reaction that can lead to fire or explosion when the battery overheats.
