President of Cyprus convenes National Council after meeting with UN Secretary-General's envoy
The president of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, met on Thursday in Brussels with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar.
During the meeting, held on the sidelines of the European Council, they discussed the resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus issue and the search for its resolution. The leader of the Greek Cypriots described the meeting as “very productive with concrete discussions” and announced that upon returning to Cyprus, he will convene a meeting of the National Council to inform political leaders about the developments.
It is expected that Nikos Christodoulides will return to Cyprus on Friday evening.
At the same time, according to local media reports, the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Ersin Tatar, departed for London on Thursday to participate in the 7th festival of Cypriots of Turkish origin.
It is expected that during his stay in the United Kingdom, he will also meet with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General. The meeting is expected to take place on July 1.
Recall that it was previously reported that the Colombian diplomat had decided not to visit the island and would meet with the leaders of the two communities separately abroad.
