TRNC President Attends Reception at British Parliament
The President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Ersin Tatar, attended a reception titled "60 Years of the Cyprus Issue" at the British Parliament. During the event, he addressed parliamentarians, ambassadors, business representatives, and members of the British press.
The reception was organized by Lord Taylor of Holbeach and the campaign "Freedom and Justice for Northern Cyprus."
“As the President of the Turkish Cypriots, I call for the lifting of the isolation and restrictions that have negatively impacted the development of our people,” said Tatar in his speech.
He further emphasized that "the Turkish Cypriot people are eager to resolve the Cyprus issue through negotiations that are fair, practical, and sustainable."
Tatar underlined the importance of stability and cooperation between the two states on the island: "For the past 60 years, there have been two de facto states on Cyprus. The way forward is to cooperate on natural resources, which can be transported through Turkey, only 60 km away from Cyprus."
Addressing the British Parliament members, Tatar urged the international community to "encourage the Greek Cypriots to work with the Turkish Cypriots. Their refusal to cooperate, based on the fear that it would legitimize the status of the TRNC, is counterproductive."
He also reminded the audience that over 350,000 Turkish Cypriots live in the UK, having achieved success across various sectors, all while maintaining strong ties to their homeland.
"Our duty to future generations is to find a fair, realistic, and lasting solution to the longstanding Cyprus problem," Tatar concluded.
At the end of his speech, the TRNC President thanked Lord Taylor, the parliamentarians, ambassadors, and all distinguished guests for attending the event.
