The President of Northern Cyprus, Ersin Tatar, had to cut short his visit to Turkey and return to the island due to issues with electing the Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly.

According to local media reports, the plane carrying the Turkish Cypriot leader landed at Ercan Airport yesterday at 6:20 PM.

During a press conference earlier in Ankara, Ersin Tatar explained that he would not be able to attend further events in Samsun and Trabzon, as he needed to return to the island on the first available flight to allow parliament to resume its operations.

It’s important to note that since Monday, Northern Cyprus has been unable to elect a new Speaker for the Republic’s Assembly. The Speaker also serves as Vice President and temporarily assumes the President’s duties when they are off the island.

Following Tatar’s return, acting Speaker of Parliament Zorlu Töre stepped down from his temporary role as President.

The former Speaker is expected to return to the Assembly, convene the Advisory Council, and restart the General Assembly session.

Meanwhile, Töre’s mandate as Speaker officially ended with a decision published in the “Official Gazette.”
