President of the TRNC Flies to New York
The President of the TRNC, Ersin Tatar, left the island today and flew to New York. On April 5, the head of Northern Cyprus will meet with the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres.
Before departing, the leader of the Turkish Cypriots made a statement to the press at Ercan Airport. In particular, Ersin Tatar confirmed that the TRNC authorities do not intend to continue the negotiation process until sovereign equality and equal international status are confirmed. Thus, the TRNC does not intend to deviate from the political course it has maintained toward Turkey for the past three years.
The head of Northern Cyprus also emphasized that the meeting with the UN Secretary-General will take place at the request of the TRNC authorities.
According to the president, "there is currently no point of convergence between the two sides."
During the president's visit, he will be accompanied by his special representative, Güneş Onar. Before his visit to New York, Ersin Tatar will also hold a series of contacts in Washington.
It is worth noting that on the eve of his departure to the United States, the head of Northern Cyprus met with the leaders of political parties represented in the Republic's Assembly. At the meeting, Ersin Tatar stated that he will ask the UN Secretary-General to lift all embargoes and restrictions on the TRNC.
