Unions Urge Government to Convene Commission for New Minimum Wage in Northern Cyprus
Ahmet Serdaroğlu, President of the Federation of Free Trade Unions (Hür-İş), has formally requested the Ministry of Labor and Social Security to convene a commission to determine the new minimum wage, which is expected to take effect on January 1, 2025.
In his written statement, Serdaroğlu criticized the government for its inability to address rising prices and inflation. He noted that the increasing cost of living will "inevitably have an impact on wages" and stressed the urgency of revising the minimum wage to reflect current economic realities.
“We are calling for the Minimum Wage Determination Commission to be convened immediately, based on the authority granted to us by law,” the Hür-İş president said.
An official letter has already been sent to the Ministry of Labor, urging the swift initiation of discussions to establish the new minimum wage by the beginning of 2025.
The most recent adjustment to the minimum wage in Northern Cyprus was made in September 2024, when it was increased to 40,436 Turkish lira.
