Remains of Seven Missing Persons Identified in Cyprus This Year
According to statistics published by the Committee on Missing Persons, the remains of seven individuals have been identified in Cyprus so far in 2024. This includes five Greek Cypriots and two Turkish Cypriots.
The committee reports that these remains were found in 49 excavation sites, 15 wells, and one burial site with bones.
In addition to the seven individuals who were identified, the remains of four more people were also confirmed. In total, 16 sets of remains have been discovered this year.
Last year, 29 sets of remains were found at excavation sites, with 15 Greek Cypriots and one Turkish Cypriot being identified.
The highest number of identifications occurred in 2014, when the identities of 140 Greek Cypriots and 17 Turkish Cypriots were established. The peak for Turkish Cypriots identified was in 2018, with 36 individuals, while 35 Greek Cypriots were identified in the same year.
To date, a total of 756 Greek Cypriots and 295 Turkish Cypriots have been identified. There are still 754 Greek Cypriots and 197 Turkish Cypriots listed as missing.
