New Poverty and Cost of Living Indicators Announced in Northern Cyprus
According to a report prepared by the Cyprus Turkish Public Servants' Trade Union (KTAMS), as of February 28, 2026, the cost of living for a family of four in Northern Cyprus amounted to 38,314 Turkish Liras, while the poverty line reached 206,656 Liras.
Calculations are based on data from the Ministry of Health and average food prices provided by the Statistical Institute. According to the report, the minimum monthly food expenditure for a family of four is 38,314 Liras.
According to the union, food expenses are as follows:
- for an adult woman — 328.70 Liras per day or 9,861 Liras per month;
- for an adult man — 344.55 Liras per day or 10,336.50 Liras per month;
- for a teenager aged 15–19 — 364.46 Liras per day or 10,933.80 Liras per month;
- for a child aged 4–6 — 239.42 Liras per day or 7,182.60 Liras per month.
It is also noted that according to official data from the Statistical Institute, inflation in February 2026 was 2.76%, and for January–February, it was 4.79%.
The union believes that the 2015 consumer basket used for calculations is outdated and does not reflect the real increase in the cost of living. Furthermore, the statement says many residents are forced to use private medical and educational services, significantly increasing family expenses.
Taking into account housing, fuel, electricity, communication, clothing, and leisure costs, a family with two children requires at least 206,656 Liras per month for a decent life, the union stated.
KTAMS Chairman Güven Bengihan noted that the poverty level in the country continues to rise, and achieving modern living standards is becoming increasingly difficult.
