Heavy rains caused flooding in several areas of Northern Cyprus
Heavy rainfall across Northern Cyprus led to flooding and emergency situations in certain areas. The most difficult conditions were reported in Kyrenia, Gönyeli, Famagusta, and on some mountain roads.
Kyrenia: flooding and fallen trees
In the Zeytinlik and Karaoğlanoğlu areas, water flowing down from the mountains resulted in large accumulations of water. According to Kyrenia Mayor Murat Şenkul, the problem is exacerbated by the fact that natural drainage channels that previously existed were built over with residential buildings and complexes.
As a result, flooding was recorded:
- in the western part of Zeytinlik,
- at the GAÜ Yolu road junction,
- in the industrial zone.
On Şahin Nedim Sokak, a centuries-old pine tree fell due to the bad weather, and on Şehit Dursun Özsaraç Sokak, an electricity pole overturned in a construction area. Road sections were temporarily closed, and municipal services, firefighters, and Electricity Authority staff worked on site.
Gönyeli and emergency services
Gönyeli–Alayköy Mayor Hüseyin Amcaoğlu stated that from the first hours of the heavy rain all services were put on high alert. Risk areas are being constantly monitored, and interventions are carried out as needed.
Famagusta: flooded basements and streets
In Famagusta, especially in industrial areas, the rains led to water accumulation on streets and flooding of shops. In the Karakol area, basement premises of two apartment buildings were flooded.
Work was carried out in coordination between the municipality, civil defense, and the fire service under the supervision of District Officer Özcen Keser. It is noted that the preliminary cleaning of stormwater systems, which began back in the summer, allowed water to be drained more quickly in many parts of the city.
Lefke: overflowing reservoirs
The Lefke Municipality reported that due to intense rainfall the Kafizes reservoir was completely filled, and excess water began flowing into the Gemikonağı reservoir. The situation is under constant control.
On the Kantara road, rockfalls and small landslides were recorded in several places. Stones and soil partially ended up on the roadway, posing a danger to drivers. Road services promptly eliminated the hazards.
The Civil Defense Service stated that reconnaissance, situation assessment, and operational response are ongoing in all regions of the country. All units are ready for possible floods, mudflows, and other emergency situations.
The authorities urge residents to:
- exercise caution,
- follow official warnings,
- avoid travel in risk zones whenever possible.
