The Union of Turkish Cypriot Journalists stated that it will not allow the discrediting of colleagues
The Union of Turkish Cypriot Journalists (Kıbrıs Türk Gazeteciler Birliği, KTGB) issued a statement on September 13, rejecting attempts to discredit journalists in Northern Cyprus.
In the statement, the organization noted the existence of systematic attempts to undermine the role of journalists and to obstruct their work.
KTGB emphasized that journalists, while risking their own safety, safeguard society’s right to receive accurate information. The text stressed that journalists’ publications and programs are being deliberately targeted by certain political circles and financially motivated groups seeking both to hinder responses from those mentioned in the reports and to discredit the authors of the coverage.
The Union pointed out that such discrediting operations do not reflect reality, are accompanied by grave insults and attempts to invade the private lives and families of media workers. The organization described these actions as an open attack on the public’s right to information and pledged not to tolerate efforts to turn journalistic work into a tool of political or economic interests.
For the people of Northern Cyprus, this statement represents support for press freedom and reaffirms the professional community’s readiness to defend objective coverage of socially important issues.
