Construction of New Hospital in Nicosia to Begin This Year
The first phase of construction for the new state hospital in Nicosia will begin this year, increasing the total number of hospital beds in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to 1,850. In addition, the Burhan Nalbantoğlu Medical Center will undergo significant renovations.
This announcement was made by Turkey’s Deputy Minister of Health, Hüseyin Kürşat Kırbişik, during a project presentation at the new Presidential campus. In his report, titled "Construction of the State Hospital in Nicosia and Renovation of the Burhan Nalbantoğlu Medical Campus," Kırbişik shared details about the recent collaboration between the Ministry of Health of Turkey and the Ministry of Health of the TRNC, as well as key health statistics in the TRNC and the overarching goals of both ministries. Visual aids illustrating the project were also presented during the session.
According to the Deputy Minister, the TRNC currently has seven state hospitals, one university hospital, and nine private hospitals, with a total of 1,625 beds:
- 1,150 beds in state hospitals
- 209 beds in university hospitals
- 266 beds in private clinics
Currently, the TRNC has 24 hospital beds per 10,000 people in the public sector and a total of 34 beds across all sectors. Bed occupancy stands at approximately 20%, with 12% of the total beds dedicated to intensive care units.
The planning for health infrastructure over the upcoming period is based on a population of 700,000, taking into account factors such as the development of the TRNC, population growth, tourism potential, and university capacity.
Features of the New Nicosia State Hospital:
- The total area of the two buildings: 215,012 square meters
- Total number of beds: 640
- Intensive care beds: 220
- Polyclinic beds: 160
- Operating rooms: 24
- Parking capacity: 840 vehicles
After renovations, the existing Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital will be transformed into a medical campus with 456 beds, continuing to offer medical services. These works will take place concurrently with the first phase of the new hospital’s construction.
As Prime Minister Ünal Üstel stated during the presentation, the tender process for the new state hospital project in Nicosia will be finalized in the coming days.
