Court Grants Bail to Nurses in Alcohol Poisoning Case Involving Infants
In Northern Cyprus, the court has granted bail to medical staff arrested during the investigation into the poisoning of seven infants at the Nicosia state hospital, one of whom tragically passed away.
The nurses who prepared the infant food containing alcohol and fed the babies, along with three other medical workers, appeared separately before the court.
During the hearing, the court ruled that since three of the nurses are citizens of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and have no prior criminal records, they would be tried without detention. However, they are prohibited from leaving the country and must each pay a bail of 200,000 Turkish Liras. Additionally, three individuals must sign a guarantee agreement for 1 million Turkish Liras.
The police also mentioned that the bail conditions could be revised if it is determined that irreversible harm was caused to the infants' health.
Two other nurses, who were found to have accidentally mixed alcohol into the infants' food, are also TRNC citizens with no criminal history. Both have been suspended from their duties. The court imposed the same bail conditions on them, including the travel ban and the requirement to confirm their attendance five days a week.
The detention conditions may be adjusted depending on the results of a report expected from Turkey as part of the ongoing investigation.
It is important to note that this incident occurred last weekend in the neonatal intensive care unit of the Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital in Nicosia. Seven newborns suddenly became ill, and tragically, one of them did not survive. The remaining six were hospitalized, with three of them being discharged yesterday.
