As a reminder, the first hearing for the Grand Isias hotel case, where 72 people, including 35 Turkish Cypriots, died in a collapse during an earthquake on February 6th, 2023, took place in the Supreme Criminal Court of Adiyaman in January. Following several days of hearings, the court issued several temporary decisions.
The lawyers representing the families of the Angel-Champions objected to the decisions made. The second hearing took place on Friday, April 26th, with around 100 Turkish Cypriots in attendance. The third hearing occurred today, June 12th.
The "Angel-Champions" refer to the members of the teenage volleyball team from Famagusta who died in the earthquake in Turkey on February 6th. The bodies of 34 people were recovered from the rubble.
Young athletes aged 12-14, their parents, and several teachers arrived for a volleyball tournament in Adiyaman just a couple of days before the tragedy. Only four parents and the deputy director of the educational institution managed to survive the earthquake.
