Temperatures are 8 degrees above normal: concern over drought is growing

The Meteorological Service of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus warns of continued abnormally warm weather: temperatures will be 6–8 degrees above seasonal norms. This increases the risk of drought, which has already affected 153 villages across the country.
Today, Northern Cyprus will be under the influence of low pressure and a warm, humid air mass. According to the meteorological service, maximum temperatures will reach 31°C in Nicosia and Güzelyurt, 30°C in Ercan and Lefke, 28°C in Famagusta, and 27°C in Kyrenia. The sky will be mostly clear in the morning and partly to mostly cloudy in the afternoon.
Winds from northern and eastern directions, moderate in strength. No storms at sea, but moderate waves are possible.
Attention: dust transport and fire risk – meteorologists emphasize the growing danger of wildfires due to heat, a moderate UV index, and increased dust transport, requiring caution. Outdoor workers and people with chronic illnesses are advised to protect themselves from the sun, drink plenty of fluids, and avoid peak heat hours.
Drought threat deepens – November temperatures above normal again raise concerns about rainfall deficits. In September 2025, all regions of the country were classified as "severe drought." Rainfall was insufficient from July to September, and over the past 12 months, the Northern Coast, Pentadaktylos Mountains, Central and Western Mesaoria, and the Karpas region have suffered extreme dryness.
The number of affected villages increased from 96 to 153.
Severe blow to agriculture and nature – the President of the Farmers’ Union, Mehmet Nizam, noted that drought is causing crop losses, especially of roughage and seeds, and is impacting the entire economy. The "Green World" movement warned of ecosystem imbalance: wildlife is suffering from hunger, thirst, and lack of shelter. The organization has called on authorities and hunters to take action.
