Tufan Erhürman assumes office as TRNC president
Tufan Erhürman officially assumed the powers of the sixth president of Northern Cyprus on October 24 during the ceremony of transferring authority from the fifth president, Ersin Tatar.
In his speech, Erhürman thanked Ersin Tatar and his wife Sibel Tatar for their service to the country. At the ceremony, Cevdet Yılmaz represented Turkey.
Erhürman assured that he will continue to listen to the population and will focus efforts on providing equal opportunities for children, their health, and welfare. He noted that the wound from recent losses will not heal easily and that this requires intensified work by the authorities.
The address also highlighted the international status of the Turkish Cypriot people: according to the president, this people is one of the equal participants on the island, and their will should not be ignored in matters of security, energy, hydrocarbons, trade routes, and EU citizenship rights.
Erhürman called for negotiations to resolve the Cyprus problem to be aimed at real and lasting solutions, emphasizing commitment to democracy and promising that the presidency will be a “home for the people.”
