In 2025, the TRNC will start vaccinating against HPV for the first time
In 2025, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) will begin vaccinating against the human papillomavirus (HPV) for the first time. January has been declared Cervical Cancer Awareness Month in Northern Cyprus.
According to the country's Minister of Health, Hakan Dinçürek, starting this year, regular HPV vaccinations will be conducted.
The Minister also noted that cervical cancer is a disease that occurs when cells in the lower part of the uterus become abnormal, and it can be treated with early diagnosis. Therefore, "it is very important to raise awareness and encourage women to have regular health check-ups."
- Early diagnosis and regular screenings are the most effective ways to prevent cervical cancer. I invite our women to regularly have a smear test and HPV tests," the Minister said.
HPV (human papillomavirus) is recognized as one of the main causes of cervical cancer. The virus is transmitted sexually and can cause changes in the cervix that may lead to cancer. According to the World Health Organization, cervical cancer ranks fourth among women after breast, colorectal, and lung cancers. However, this type of cancer can be largely prevented through early diagnosis and preventive measures.
The Ministry of Health of the TRNC offers free screening and early detection services for cervical cancer throughout the country. Pap smears and early diagnosis services are provided free of charge at the following medical centers:
