Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, Minister of Public Works and Transport Erhan Arıklı, and Minister of the Interior Dursun Oğuz inspected the newly implemented biometric data system at Ercan Airport. Over the next three months, the registration process will be expanded to include the collection of biometric data from foreign students.

Speaking at a press conference following the inspection, the prime minister emphasized that, thanks to devices provided by Türkiye, biometric data checks on criminals have been introduced at the airport and seaports of the TRNC for the first time in history. This initiative aims to combat illegal migration, strengthen registration processes, and enhance national security.

“We have begun collecting biometric data from foreigners who have been denied entry and those awaiting deportation. Today, we officially launched this system. Within the next three months, biometric data from foreign students will also be recorded, significantly increasing registration volume. All necessary planning and technical preparations have been completed. Establishing a biometric database is already helping to detect crimes and criminals, prevent smuggling, and bolster national security,” said Ünal Üstel.

Authorities also reported that last year, 5,200 passengers were denied entry and sent back after questioning. In the coming days, a dedicated facility for housing illegal migrants will be opened as part of a protocol agreement with Türkiye.

Ünal Üstel also highlighted that since the opening of the new Ercan Airport, passenger traffic and flight frequency have increased by approximately 25%. Most operational issues have been resolved, and the remaining ones will be addressed in the coming months to ensure Ercan meets international standards.

Minister of Transport Erhan Arıklı stated:
“Our goal is to transform Ercan into an internationally recognized airport as soon as possible, eliminate any deficiencies, and prepare for an accreditation inspection by a company arriving from the UK.”
