Man Detained at Ercan Airport with Live Ammunition — Court Orders 20-Day Arrest

A man was brought back to court at Ercan Airport after a 9mm live round was discovered in his backpack during departure security checks.

The individual, identified as Talat Zirek, is accused of illegal import, possession, and transportation of explosive substances.

Police officer Direnç Has testified in court that on February 17, 2026, at approximately 15:45, a live 9mm round marked MKE 12 9P was found in the suspect's backpack during an X-ray scan at the "Kale 8" machine. The ammunition was seized as evidence, and the man was detained on the spot.

The investigation revealed that the bullet was brought into the TRNC on February 12 through the Kyrenia tourism port. Ballistic examination has been completed, and the investigation is concluded.

Police stated that the suspect entered the country as a tourist and requested his continued detention.

Judge Şevket Gazi ruled to keep Talat Zirek in prison for a period of 20 days.
