An explosion occurred at a scrap metal collection point in Aradippou — three people seriously injured, cause — military ordnance
Yesterday morning at a scrap metal collection point in the Aradippou area (Larnaca district), an explosion occurred, resulting in three people being seriously injured. According to Fileleftheros, the source of the incident was a military munition taken from the RMMO training ground in the Kosi (Üçşehitler) area.
According to the police and the RMMO bomb disposal unit, the explosion happened when a 52-year-old man brought in collected scrap metal and a 39-year-old Nigerian worker at the collection point threw the delivered pieces onto the general pile. A 42-year-old Bulgarian-origin man who happened to be at the site was also hit by shrapnel. All three were taken to Larnaca General Hospital; surgeries are planned to remove embedded fragments.
A second unexploded ordnance was found at the site, which was removed and destroyed by controlled detonation. The newspaper recalls that on September 13, 2023, a similar explosion with injuries had already taken place in Aradippou.
The incident once again raises the issue of the need for strict control of access to RMMO ranges and the closure of unlicensed scrap collection points. For residents and businesses, this means increased danger when collecting scrap metal near military training grounds and the necessity of complying with the instructions of the authorities and police.
