Gönyeli-Alayköy proposes creation of shared shelter for 5,000 stray dogs
A meeting dedicated to the issue of stray dogs was held at the Gönyeli-Alayköy Municipality. Representatives from Taşkent Nature Park (Taşkent Doğa Parkı), the Animal Protection Society, and the Union of Turkish Cypriot Municipalities participated in the discussion.
The Director of Taşkent Nature Park, Kemal Basat, presented a project for a modern, fully equipped shelter designed to house 5,000 dogs. Municipal mayors discussed a potential management model for the future complex and agreed that it should be managed by a structure involving the Union of Municipalities, Taşkent Nature Park, and the Veterinary Department.
Meeting participants emphasized that current legislation regarding the treatment of stray animals needs urgent updates. It was also suggested to establish a special fund where municipalities would contribute resources to solve the problem step-by-step.
Furthermore, a proposal was made for the government to allocate a plot of land or a building for the construction of a shared shelter, which could serve as a coordination center for stray animal management across the country.
