Officials from the Department of Livestock at the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, alongside the Kyrenia Municipality, recently conducted inspections of restaurants in the Old Harbor area. Those failing to comply with regulations will face penalties.

The inspections, aimed at combating illegal fishing practices, specifically targeted establishments serving seafood.

Following the inspections, it was discovered that six restaurants did not meet the required standards regarding the type and size of their operations. Warnings were issued, and informational brochures were handed out to the businesses. Inspections will continue at various restaurants in the coming days. The names of the establishments have not been disclosed by the authorities.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources explained that, while municipal teams were checking businesses for food safety compliance, aquaculture experts were also carrying out inspections based on fishing permit regulations and sustainable use of fish resources. The checks focused on the minimum size of fish served, as well as the quantity and weight of seafood. No details on any violations found have been released.

It’s worth noting that the Ministry of Agriculture, the Department of Livestock, and the Fisheries Department of the TRNC previously reminded fish restaurant owners about seasonal fishing bans for certain fish species during their breeding periods.
