Three Young Honey Buzzards Fail to Survive at the Wildlife Hospital in Northern Cyprus
Three young honey buzzards (Pernis apivorus) were admitted to the Tashkent Nature Park Wildlife Hospital after being found during their first migration to their wintering grounds. Unfortunately, they did not survive.
According to a social media statement from the nature reserve, the injuries sustained by the birds were varied. One buzzard had a dislocated right shoulder, likely resulting from a collision with a vehicle. Another buzzard suffered a traumatic hemorrhagic wound and a fractured left wing, probably caused by an airplane collision. The third bird, found underweight and with a gunshot wound, had five pellets in its body and an old, healed fracture in its left wing.
"We deeply regret that none of these birds will ever contribute to the population again, as they did not survive. Unfortunately, such cases are not uncommon. Many young honey buzzards arrive in Cyprus exhausted or injured and often struggle to continue their long migratory journey to Africa," the nature park stated.
