A new waste separation initiative, called the "Waste Star" project, has officially launched in Karşıyaka, North Cyprus. The pilot program, which is being implemented in 67 households, aims to contribute to environmental protection and boost the economy by raising awareness about waste recycling.

The project is part of a civil growth initiative funded by the European Union and is being carried out by the Karşıyaka Culture and Arts Association in cooperation with the Lapta - Alsancak - Çamlıbel Municipality (LAÇ). Its primary goal is to encourage waste separation at the source and spread recycling knowledge to create a more sustainable environment.

In the first phase, waste recycling training will be provided to 67 households in the village of Karşıyaka. Participants will separate their household waste into paper, plastic, and metal. The sorted waste will then be transported to a separation center funded by the LAÇ municipality, where it will be weighed.

At the end of the three-month data collection period, a comprehensive report will be compiled for the region. Based on the findings, the project is expected to be expanded throughout the municipality.

The main aim of the initiative is to reduce household waste, introduce recycled materials back into the economy, and promote reuse. The Karşıyaka Culture and Arts Association had previously led a successful glass bottle recycling project, which, in partnership with the municipality, has been showcased as a model for other recycling efforts.

The project is also expected to increase local awareness about the importance of recycling.
