Cleaner Suspected in Gold Theft Worth Hundreds of Thousands of Lira from a House in Gönyeli
The police in Northern Cyprus have arrested a cleaner suspected of stealing gold bars and jewelry worth hundreds of thousands of Turkish lira. The woman denies any wrongdoing.
According to a police press release, the suspect, Jamila Baymurodova, appeared before the District Court of Nicosia.
During the court session, a police representative stated that the theft occurred between June 14 and October 5, 2024. An unknown individual allegedly stole 80 gold bars valued at 424,000 TL from a residence in Gönyeli, along with other expensive items, including a diamond ring worth 70,000 TL, a necklace valued at 120,000 TL, and 18 jewelry pieces totaling 70,000 TL.
The theft report was filed with the police on October 5. Authorities believe that Jamila Baymurodova, who worked as a cleaner in the home, is involved in the crime. It is known that the suspect left the country in August, promising her employer that she would return to work. However, upon her arrival in September, she did not get back in touch. After discovering the missing valuables, the victims contacted the police, leading to her arrest under a warrant.
In court, the detained woman maintained her innocence, stating that she had not seen any gold and was not involved in the theft of the jewelry.
The presiding judge ordered that the suspect be held in custody for three days for further investigation.
