Meteor Spotted Over Nicosia

A bright object streaked across the sky over Nicosia last evening, catching the attention of witnesses who managed to capture the rare sight on camera. Astronomers believe it was a meteor.

According to the Cyprus Astronomical Organization, the object was seen at around 6:00 PM. Photos and videos of its passage have since surfaced online. Before vanishing, it left behind a dazzling trail of light.

The phenomenon was photographed by Haris Efstathiou, who provided valuable data for further analysis. The organization has called on anyone else who witnessed the event to share additional photos or reports to help determine the object's exact nature and trajectory.

Cypriot media report that both police and military authorities are investigating the incident.

This isn’t the first time a meteor has been spotted over Cyprus. A similar event occurred on August 21, 2023, when a bright sphere with a greenish tail was seen near Güzelyurt and Lefke before heading inland from the sea.

Later, a small asteroid that passed over the entire island was officially recorded by the American Meteor Society.
