In Nicosia, 150 people engaged in a mass brawl: 20 participants of the altercation have been detained
Police are investigating the details of a mass brawl on Zahra Street in the fortress city of Nicosia. Up to 150 people were involved in the melee. 20 of them have already been detained and will appear in court today.
According to eyewitnesses and local media reports, the brawl in the most popular entertainment district of Nicosia occurred late Thursday evening. It's not reported what exactly the young people disagreed on, but judging by the videos posted on social media from the scene, sticks, stones, and even tables and chairs from local cafes were used.
It is reported that about 150 young people aged approximately 17 to 22 participated in the brawl. As later reported to the police, many of them are well-known to law enforcement for their involvement in local youth groups and have had previous legal issues.
The day after the brawl on Zahra Street in the old city, police questioned about 100 people. 20 participants in the brawl have been arrested. Today, the Nicosia District Court is expected to determine pretrial measures for them.
The police continue to investigate the incident, including reviewing surveillance camera footage, in order to identify the most aggressive participants in the violent brawl.
