Ancient Dukkanlar Onyu Mosque Restored in Nicosia
In Nicosia, the ancient Dukkanlar Onyu Mosque has been restored. It was destroyed in the 1960s and remained unusable until today.
The restoration of the Dukkanlar Onyu Mosque was carried out in accordance with its original appearance with the assistance of the Cyprus Evkaf Administration and the General Directorate of Foundations of the Turkish Republic under the "Agreement on the Restoration of Cultural Heritage of the TRNC Foundation located in the TRNC."
The statement mentions that the Dukkanlar Onyu Mosque is of great significance in terms of continuing efforts to protect and preserve the cultural heritage of the country and safeguarding the cultural wealth of the city.
After restoration, the mosque was handed over to the residents of the region.
The Dukkanlar Onyu Mosque is located in the Karamanzade district of Nicosia in Northern Cyprus. The building is mentioned as the Tevfik Mosque near the Paphos Gate in the founding deed dated 1838 according to the Gregorian calendar.
The mosque, which could not be preserved in its original form, was demolished in 1962 due to lack of supervision. The building, which was not restored after its collapse, was left to fate as it was located near the green line.
The reconstruction of the historic building began in 2017 based on projects prepared in collaboration with the TRNC Foundations Administration and the General Directorate of Foundations of Turkey.
