Young male and female athletes aged 12-14, their parents, and several teachers arrived for a volleyball tournament in Adıyaman a couple of days before the tragedy. Only four parents and the deputy director of the educational institution survived the earthquake.

Following the hearings held in early January, the court issued several temporary decisions.
