In the neonatal intensive care unit of Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital in Nicosia, seven newborns fell critically ill, with one of them tragically passing away. Following the incident, an investigation has led to the arrest of five medical staff members.

Initial reports indicate that the incident in the perinatal center took place on Friday, as the conditions of seven newborns suddenly deteriorated. Tragically, one baby could not be saved. The 20-day-old infant, Mihrimah Toymuradova, was in an incubator receiving treatment for complications related to premature birth.

News of the infant's passing reportedly reached the Ministry of Health and relevant authorities late on Saturday, causing significant delays in response. An investigation was immediately launched upon learning of the incident, and the medical personnel on duty were suspended.

Media reports suggest that alcohol may have accidentally been administered to the newborns instead of water, though the exact cause is currently under investigation by authorities.

The Ministry of Health released a statement over the weekend, saying, “Due to the simultaneous worsening in the conditions of seven infants in the neonatal intensive care unit and the death of one, an administrative investigation has begun, and notifications have been sent to judicial authorities. We are fully cooperating with law enforcement to ensure a thorough and safe investigation.”

In response to the tragic loss, further investigations into the death of the 20-day-old infant led to the arrest of five medical personnel, who are expected to appear before the Nicosia District Court today. An autopsy will also be conducted today to determine the exact cause of death.

TRNC Health Minister Hakan Dinçyürek stated that the Ministry of Health has convened all neonatal experts across the island and has set up a crisis center at the hospital under the leadership of Prime Minister Ünal Üstel. The condition of the other six infants affected by the incident is reportedly improving.

“We have taken precautions to prevent any further deterioration in the health of high-risk infants. All medical examinations are ongoing, and four medical staff members have been placed on mandatory night shifts to monitor the situation closely,” the minister stated.

TRNC President Ersin Tatar also addressed the tragic event, expressing condolences to the family of the deceased infant and wishing the other infants a swift recovery. He added that he would personally monitor the progress of the investigation.
