Commemoration Day of Atatürk Kicks Off in Northern Cyprus
In Northern Cyprus, solemn ceremonies honoring the Commemoration Day of Atatürk, Youth, and Sports, observed in Turkey and TRNC on May 19, commenced today. The celebration began with the lighting of the "Youth Torch" in Nicosia.
Traditionally, the anniversary of the liberation struggle, initiated by the great leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk with his journey to Samsun on May 19, 1919, is marked in TRNC with solemn ceremonies and events.
At the "Youth Torch Lighting" ceremony held on May 14 at the Atatürk Monument in Nicosia, the Minister of National Education of TRNC, Nazım Çavuşoğlu, ministry officials, students, and teachers were present.
The minister laid a wreath at the monument. After a minute of silence, the flags were raised accompanied by the National Anthem.
In his speech at the ceremony, the minister noted that the landing of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in Samsun on May 19, 1919, was the first spark that ignited the torch of independence and the first step towards the establishment of the Republic of Turkey.
Following the speeches, the ceremony concluded with the lighting of the "Youth Torch." The celebration of Atatürk Memorial Day in Northern Cyprus will continue shortly with various solemn events.
