TRNC to mark the 20th anniversary of the Annan Plan referendum with a discussion
The Republican Turkish Party (CTP) will hold a panel discussion titled “We Are Here, We Are Making History” on April 17 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the referendum on the Annan Plan.
CTP Secretary-General Aşım Akansoy reminded that 20 years have passed since the historic referendum on the Annan Plan on the island of Cyprus.
“If the peace plan proposed by the United Nations had been accepted by both communities in Cyprus, the 'United Federal Cyprus' would have been 20 years old,” the politician said.
Recall that the Kofi Annan Plan was a United Nations initiative to settle the Cyprus conflict between the two divided peoples on the island of Cyprus.
It envisaged the creation of a new state, the United Cyprus Republic, divided into two autonomies (Greek with 69.5% of the territory and Turkish with 28.5%). The plan was named after the then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who made the most significant contribution to its drafting along with Didier Fitero.
“We respectfully welcome this worthy will on the 20th anniversary of the referendum. Although the Annan Plan was not accepted, the initiative, solidarity, efforts, honesty of heart, and conscientiousness of the Turkish Cypriots will never be forgotten,” said Aşım Akansoy.
As part of the discussion, its organizers plan to discuss the future of Cyprus in the context of those historical events.
The public discussion will take place on Wednesday, April 17, at 19:00 at the Famagusta Town Hall. Representatives of the public are invited to participate in the dialogue.
